I was watching High School Musical 2 (is it blasphemous if I liked it more than the first one?). Most people think it’s shittier since it’s way more ridiculous. But doesn’t that make it better in the end? My entire love of DCOMs is based on how ridiculous they are! The more garish, cheesy, campy, blatantly ludicrous the better! As I’ve gotten older, this happens more often when what at first I hate about something eventually becomes what I love about it. When I first watched that number, I teetered between feeling very embarrassed for Zac Efron, since that will always exist forever for the world to see, and simply basking in the magnificence of this perfect concoction of candy-coated, queeny, tweeny goodness. The more I watch it, the more I lean towards the latter.
As the headmaster of my old bougie high school used to say at fundraisers, “We drink out of wells others have dug”. This masterpiece would not have been possible if it weren’t for certain cutting edge works that paved the way, like the following: Embedding was disabled for this video so you just have to go to the link: “Separate Ways” by Journey”
Though HSM2 and Journey have illustrated the magic and power unique to the art of the angry dance, no one quite reaches the same heights as Flight of the Conchords:
